Golden Globes 2019: The Best Looks

Welcome back.

It feels weird to say that after such a long time of no posts. I’m sorry for my sudden disappearance. I certainly didn’t plan for it to happen and I’m hoping that my return will be welcomed by you. I know that I should explain myself, but some things are just not meant to be shared. All I can say is that coming back to blogging is one of my ways to cope with difficult times, fingers crossed it will work.

Today let’s review best red carpet looks from Golden Globes 2019.

This year’s  ceremony as far as fashion goes was not bad… safe, but not bad. Golden Globes are obviously pretty predictible when it comes to what one can and can’t wear, but there is still a place for some creativity. Most of the time celebrities just want to look beautiful… or sexy, it depends. Glamour is so mainstream these days, that it stopped impressing me a while ago. Long fitted gowns, crystals and sleek hairdos aren’t show-stopping anymore.

I’m glad that this year, we could see some more variety in color scheme (green alert) and overall presentation. There were a few examples of successful uses of heavier patterns as well as stunning bold make-ups. I also love that more and more often we see men experimanting with their forrmal attire.

Overall I am not a fan of Golden Globes 2019 fashion looks. Most of them were simply boring and many celebrities didn’t have their garments properly fitted. I picked photos of some of the stars, whose outfits I enjoyed.

Hope you’ll like the gallery. Please let me know who impressed you the most.

Get inspired: Checks/Plaid

Welcome back!

Summer is here and we’re enjoying it. We’re living in light, flowy dresses, shorts, weightless jumpsuits and silky camisoles. At least I do (if you want to know what are my 5 summer essentials, you can see it here). I know that nobody wants to be reminded that holidays won’t last forever. But really, they won’t.

To make this statement seem a bit more optimistic, I can reassure you that upcoming autumn can also be very exciting and pleasurable. I cherish the beginning of new semester, new challenges, new friends, starting from point zero. It’s also time when the most important – September issue of magazines comes out, which is always awaited by many. I have to say tough, I hate fall’s weather. Rain, mud, darkness make me feel tired, sleepy and overall exhausted.

I’ll try to get some positivity into you, by showing one of the Autumn 2018 biggest trends, which is plaid. I can’t say that it is revolutionary to put on a tartan trench coat during fall, but right now this pattern got a bit of a make-over and became much more modern, fun and functional.

Plaid was present in clothing for decades. Red checked trousers were a staple in punk’s closet, Kurt Cobain wouldn’t be himself without his flannel shirt, grunge or preppy style probably wouldn’t exist at all. It just goes to show how versatile this pattern is, how it can be worn in countless ways.

There are also many different types of plaid: from classy houndstooth, summery gingham to contemporary window pane check. If you’re interested in how all those variations look, there will be a chart with all of them as the very last photo in this post.

Since the weather is still really hot, it’s worth pointing out that checks can be a great pattern to choose even now. If you enjoy retro vibes, two-pieces in white and pink/yellow  might be perfect, fun pick. Also going for most basic tank top with tartan skirt or shorts will be a foolproof way to achieve effortless but certainly not boring look.

Checks are going to be this fall/winter seasons must-haves. This pattern could be observed on almost all major catwalks during fashion week. Every designer approached it from a different perspective, usually from the unusual one. Erdem went for a dark, mysterious, slightly dramatic aesthetic, matching heavy double-buttoned jackets with long skirts and sheer hosiery. Versace’s collection was straight up from Clueless’ wardrobe. Purple and yellow, belt bags and mixing different checks is really 90s-approved. Saint Laurent proved that glen check can be a part of sexy night-out stylization. Michel Kors showed us a grunge option, Fendi had some head-to-toe plaid outfits, while Emporio Armani created chic, modern, polished pieces.

So, to sum it up: plaid in every shape or form is in this upcoming season. You can experiment with it, mix with other patterns, layer, pick bold colors. If you’ll get rid of the idea that tartan is a boring, old-fashioned fabric, than you might find a new favourite fall/winter fashion staple.

Here’s a gallery with the best looks from runways and street that include checked clothing.

Enjoy!

Summer outfit ideas: Black Romper/Jumpsuit

It’s been a long time since I last wrote for you.

OK, it’s been two weeks. Well…

It turned out that I’m much more busy and tired during holidays, than I was while going to school. Finding time for work, studying for exams, writing and maintaining what so called social life is extremely tough and leaves me with 5 hours of sleep at most. I know that that’s what I need to do in order to achieve what I truly want in life (so it’s almost like I want to wake up at 5:30… maybe I should even enjoy it?). I want to be able to post articles here as frequently as possible, so no matter how many other things are going on in my days, there’s no way I’m not going to make it work. Especially since MyVanityFlare is what gives me so much inspiration and power. I think that it comes from the knowledge that maybe what I write is valuable to you.

As for today’s post – it is a photoshoot that was taken on a very busy Sunday and was almost cancelled due to thunder, which thankfully stopped half an hour earlier. Three hours of walking around Warsaw, watching Vistula and searching for the perfect scenery have resulted in many photos, that I’ll be uploading here and on @myvanityflare Instagram in the upcoming days.

The outfits that I’ll be presenting, so this one too, all are heat-friendly and for the most part they are a visualization of one of my previous posts on this season’s essentials. They also feature one of 2018 summer’s trends – wearing sneakers with everything. To me this concept is not something new, not because I’m an avid fan of these shoes, but simply because my lifestyle requires so much walking, running and just in general being constantly in a rush, that usually heels can’t be my choice ( they still are my choice way too often…but who doesn’t love the confidence boost that they give?).

This stylization is one of my personal summer staples. I literally wear it all the time. Even now, when it’s rather cold in Warsaw I still put on this romper, but with sheer black tights and a striped Balmain-like jacket. It’s actually supposed to be a “night-out” piece,  but I do not care about what is written on the label. You also shouldn’t. It is wrapped around waist, which is always great for elongating the silhouette. It has lower back and it kind of became a little black dress for me.

Another garment that I want to talk a bit more about is the bag. I was looking for the perfect shopper, that would be able to fit my whole life inside. Doesn’t sound that hard, does it? The thing is, I didn’t want it to be made of genuine leather. That is for the ethical reasons. I’m trying to support as little cruelty to animals as possible in every aspect of my existence. I knew that my accessories don’t have to be leather in order to be high-quality and extraordinary. After more than a year of searching, I finally bought my dream bag. It’s classy and elegant, but certainly not basic. i love it’s „snake” material, gold details, lack of big brand logo and practicality. It was also much more affordable than similar, leather models.

These shots were taken in two locations, but one is literally on the opposite side of the street to the other. Leaves are what covers the BUW-Library of Warsaw University facade and the copper-turquoise wall was a surprising discovery that we were more than excited to stumble upon.

I hope that you’ll enjoy this gallery and that it will give you some real-life examples of how to style The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer.

Enjoy!

Fashion ID: Kate Spade – biography, journey to success and creations

On June 5th this year, Kate Spade – a renowned fashion designer, creator of iconic ,,Sam” bag, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment. She committed a suicide by hanging. It is known that she suffered from depression and anxiety, but refused to receive treatment. Her family said that she was afraid of disappointing her fans and losing the identity of a cheerful, always optimistic entrepreneur.

How did she take her brand from manufacturing bags using burlap fabric sourced from a potato sack maker to an international company worth $2.4 billion?

Katherine Noel Brosnahan was born on December 24 in 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri, where her parents owned a road-construction company. Back in her childhood she wasn’t passionate or even really aware of the fashion world. She attended  St. Teresa’s Academy, an all-girl Catholic high school. Then the designer became a student of the University of Kansas. Later, she transferred to Arizona State University, where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and graduated with a journalism degree in 1985. It was then, that she met Andy Spade – her future life and business partner. Together they moved to New York, where Kate got a job in the accessories department at esteemed Mademoiselle magazine. She left it after 5 years with the title of Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories.

While working for the fashion newspaper, she was constantly surrounded by bags in every shape, color and size that one can imagine. She wasn’t impressed by stiff classics from Chanel and Prada, nor the staid brown and black leather options from Coach and Longchamp. She couldn’t pick even one garment that she found both practical and mesmerizing. That’s why she decided to establish her own company and create a clutch from her dreams. She searched for inspiration in second hands (here’s my article on why you shop in thrift stores) and flea markets. Without any professional courses in design, with only Andy’s money, she fulfilled her goal in 1993.

She had an idea, but lack of experience didn’t make it easy to gain trust and support from industry and potential clients. Manufacturers didn’t want to work with her and when the end seemed inevitable, she found a potato-sack maker that agreed to supply her with materials. Simple, square bag made from burlap and raffia was so obvious, yet so intriguing, especially in New York. Maybe that’s why famous Barney’s noticed the young brand.

Company had to face another problem – its name. „Kate Brosnahn” didn’t sound too splendid,  „Olive” or „Alex Noel” were also rejected. Since it was then, that Andy Spade started to be the main investor of Kate’s idea, he wanted to have something to say when it comes to how it will be called. he proposed a combination of pair’s names. They agreed on ,, Kate Spade”, which became even more substantial when the couple got married a year later.

Kate Spade New York debuted with a collection of 6 bags, ranging in price from $100 to $400.  At the center of its inaugural collection was the ,,Sam” bag, a boxy handbag that would become one of its signatures. Brosnahan combined sleek, utilitarian fabrics and colourful palettes with the simple goal of creating the perfect handbag; something timeless, yet personal. The concept was to create pieces that were the antithesis of the fashion excess that had been seen in the 80s – and which spoke to the emerging minimalist mindset of the 90s. Who was Spade’s client? She was a classic New York working girl, a student of private school in Manhattan, from upper middle class, a dedicated customer of Barney’s. She wanted to be elegant, but certainly not too mature, not old lady-like.

The second collection also became an instant success, however it probably could be attributed to the last-minute changes. The night before the grand reveal, Kate ripped out company’s logo from the inside and, notably to many, sewed it in lowercase, on the outside of the pieces. The scheme became a must-have immediately and just two months later, the bags were featured in Vogue, next to Gucci accessories.

The company didn’t turn a profit for three years, though, Andy was still funding everything. 1996 was a pivotal year for the brand. It’s when the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awarded Spade the New Fashion Talent in Accessories prize(in 1998, she was honoured at the event, picking up the best accessory designer of the year award).  She also opened her first store, in New York’s downtown SoHo neighborhood. Plus, the company finally broke even.

American Vogue editor Anna Wintour and other influential style icons like Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow were fans. The purses became something of a handshake and so, when two women met and they were both holding Kate Spade bags, they’d nod at each other and understand that there was a connection between them.

The next seven years were packed with the kind of commercial success and critical acclaim that fashion designers only dream of. Between 1993 and 1995, sales jumped from $100,000 to $1.5m, and by 1998 reached $27m. It seemed virtually impossible to walk down a street in an American city without seeing that distinctive label swing past you. Together, the Spades had a rare gift for creating not just a product that you loved—the perfect, sensible-yet-stylish bag—but an aesthetic that you wanted to be a part of.

The couple sold 56 % of their company to Neiman Marcus, the high-end department store, for nearly $34 million in 1999. The label spent the next few years expanding into other retail categories by entering licensing partnerships with Lenox’s home goods, selling luxury diaper bags and strollers, dressing flight attendants and immortalizing its preppy Upper East Side aesthetic in coffee table books. Kate Spade always aimed to have one, just one, very specific client, but to be everything to him.

After Spade sold entire control of her  label to the Neiman Marcus Group in 2006, the designer took time away from running her own business to raise her daughter. She was officially not connected with her own brand in any way, except for holding the same name. Neiman sold Kate Spade for $124 million to retail giant Liz Claiborne, which was ramping up its portfolio by buying up companies like Ellen Tracy, Lucky Brand Jeans, and Juicy Couture. Liz Claiborne, Inc., would also undergo some changes in the following years: The company rebranded as Fifth & Pacific in 2012, then again to Kate Spade & Company in 2014. In 2017 Coach bought Kate Spade for a reported $2.4 billion; that fall it was incorporated into Tapestry, Inc.

The designer – Kate Spade returned in 2016 with Frances Valentine, a new fashion and lifestyle brand that took its name from members of her family. Spade then legally added the names to her own, becoming Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan Spade. This project was supposed to be a bit more grown-up and appeal to older clients. Stores like Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom carried out her designs, but because of the tragic death of the creator, the brand certainly didn’t use its  potential to the fullest.

For me Kate Spade is the perfect example of somebody with vision, passion and courage to do what he believes is right. When she was starting her journey, getting into the industry dominated by fashion houses with years of experience, long and intimidating history, specialist in every field was extremely difficult and required unlimited amounts of strength and determination. She always stayed true to herself, even were some considered her work to be quirky, childish, tasteless. She was the first one to give a woman an item, that supplied her with power, that made her get her head up and feel confident. She made it possible for most young girls with big dreams, to start embodying, a person that they want to become in the future.

Kate Spade’s bag wasn’t just a fashion accessory, it was an investment… an investment in one’s self.

,,Live life colorfully” was her motto. Maybe she wasn’t always able to do so, but one thing we can do continue her legacy is to start implementing this mantra into our reality. I think that that was her goal, tomato others stand proud and just be happy…surrounded by glitter.

All of the pride-celebrating clothes you can get right now

Hello!

As promised in my last post about summer fashion essentials, I summoned all of my resources and  I am already back with another article.

Every year, June is the official Pride Month. Why ? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969. The riots were prompted by a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. The LGBT community held a series of spontaneous, often violent demonstrations to protest against it and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation without fears of being arrested. Over the years since the event, many activist groups and LGBT rights organisations have been formed around the world. The movement  celebrates sexual diversity, is a way of protesting against discrimination and violence for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people . It promotes their dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s awareness of the issues they face.

Here, on MyVanityFlare I want to show you how fashion can change one’s life, how big of an impact it can have. You might think that it is too provoking, too attention-grabbing to wear clothes that are a demonstration of one’s beliefs about sexuality. I understand this point of view. On the other side I can’t find a legitimate reason why seeing somebody in a colorful T-shirt would bother anyone so much. It’s not surprising that after years of living in shame, guilt or social isolation a person wants to just be free and openly show how she/he feels. Especially today, in the era of omnipresent exhibitionism, social media and reality shows we have this urge to share everything with the whole world.

If wearing a pride flag pattern on your hat is going to make you feel proud and confident, then that’s the magic of fashion I truly admire. I know that for some people it is really difficult to find the courage to do such a thing and so, if they finally decide to do it, it is such a freeing and memorable moment for them. I am an avid supporter of that.

Why do worldwide famous, sometimes even high-fashion designers want and do celebrate the Pride? Why do they create special garments with LGBT symbols on them? Some of the possible reasons are:

  1. It sells

Yes, I know that this statements seems harsh and totally not noble in any way, but it’s true. Over the years, more and more people admitted to being a part or a supporter of the LGBT community. It resulted in overall increase in public’s interest in this topic and also culture’s involvement. The machine has been set off and we got numerous big outings from famous figures, social campaigns, books and so much more. It couldn’t have been escaped that Pride Month will become a tool to make money, and so it did.

2. It is in fashion

Of course, just the sheer fact that Pride can give a luxury brand profit,  won’t make it worth investing in. When we talk about high-fashion, we need to remember the importance of the image that is carefully planned and presented to the client and the prestige that usually took years to be achieved. Quite recently, LGBT community started to expand and as a result stopped being associated with tackiness and bizarreness. It has come to people’s minds that its supporters have no identical look, they come from different backgrounds, they have different stories and that very often when seen on the street they don’t seem to be different that those around. Because why would they? That’s why even expensive, elegant brands aren’t afraid anymore to create collections that are connected to Pride. It is no longer something to hide, be ashamed of, rather the opposite, something upstanding, that suggests open-mindedness and consciousness.

3. It is relatable

Sometimes a designer may just feel connected to this community, probably be a part of it. Then making a decision to help it, might seem almost like a necessity, a matter of honor. Fashion world is usually equated with homosexuality, most famous designers are speculated to be gay, however it’s not that common for them to be very open about their sexuality or make any statements. Another think that can happen is that a brand will invite someone who does identify with LGBT community to collaborate and create a seasonal collection. This is a manifestation of support, but doesn’t make the creator himself attached to Pride directly.

To celebrate Pride Month 2018, there has been a lot of special products released to the market. I think that the reasons behind this are not as important as the believes they verbalize.

The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer

Welcome back to MyVanityFlare!

It feels so good to write for you again. I’m so sorry for not publishing anything lately, but my life got busy with school year ending and I had to devote my time and energy to studying. Thankfully I can say that it was worth it and I’m content with the grades I achieved. Now that I’m done with that, one of my goals for holidays is to focus on growing this blog and creating amazing articles for you.

First one : The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer.

The idea for this post came to me when I was away from home for a few weeks with just one small suitcase and so, only a few options as far as outfits go. It surprised me that I always had something to wear and was never unsatisfied with the way I look or feel. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? I know that for many people the concept of not having tons of garments to choose from seems more like a nightmare, but on the other hand they are usually the ones to cry and panic every morning because from millions of dresses they own not even one is suitable to be worn on this day. I also used to be like this, but lately I’ve learned to buy less, but make better choices.

PS: If you’d like an article on that please let me know in the comments.

Coming back to  summer clothing. Here’s what I think is important to consider when choosing an outfit during this season:

  • The weather

In Poland, where I currently live, it is around 30ºC. That’s a really high temperature that significantly limits the outfit choices I have. I refuse to be melting in the sun in the name of fashion (OK, I would do anything in the name of fashion, but I try to stay sane for the most part). It can be tempting to just go out in the bikini but society taught us that there are more classy things to do. So, all of the options I’ll present are really light, usually flow and they let your skin breathe.

  •   Your activity

I try to truly use the opportunities that summer brings, to their fullest, which means that I do much more outdoor activities than normally. Whenever I can, I use public bikes instead of busses or underground as my commute. I also try to always have a small towel with me and if it is possible sit in the park or in the beach and do my usual work. It can be tricky to be comfortable and not have a wardrobe malfunction in skimpy short shorts or in a tight mini skirt. I don’t think that clothes should cause you to change your daily plans or limit them, so in the gallery I created you’ll find pieces that are very universal and practical.

  •  The elegance

When we think about typical clothes to wear in the heat it’s often things like crop tops, dresses with cut-outs, ”booty shorts”, pineapple-printed shirts, baseball caps, flip flops and other beach/hippie-inspired garments. And don’t get me wrong, I love some of these too, but the problem is that I am aware that they don’t make me look particularly sophisticated. It’s not that I always need to or want to be perceived this way, but quite frequently I do. Living in the city, going to restaurants, museums, running errands, meeting people, I like to be rather elegant. Obviously I won’t go for stiff shirts, suits or long dresses. There are great options that say class and still are appropriate for when it’s hot.

  • * Trends

I wasn’t sure if I should include this point in here, because I am a strong believer that trends aren’t eternal and usually are just a tool to make us spend more money on the things we do not need. But there’s one thing that is certainly true: what is on top is what is on store shelves. Even when you don’t intend to, you probably subconsciously buy clothes that were created in accordance to what was presented on the runways and predicted to be profitable. Sometimes it’s even harder to find something simple and basic, instead of a garment all covered in sequins, because they are said to be trendy now. Don’t worry though, if I don’t enjoy what is popular I don’t promote it, I promise.

It is crucial in my opinion to find the balance between looking good and feeling good and I hope that what I’m going to show you will be helpful in achieving that. I can guarantee you that if you’ll take at least some of my advice you will be able to open your closet in the morning and without a single doubt pick your clothes  for the beautiful summer day ahead of you.

So, here are the only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer:

  1. Romper/ Jumpsuit

These are seriously life-changing. They come in so many different styles, materials and colors. I love the ones that look like dresses, because they are very often not tight, they fit really well and are perfect for when you want to be a bit more active. I recommend sleeveless ones and since I am a petite girl and always try to make my legs look longer,   jumpsuits with underlined waist are my go-to.

2.  Camisole top

They are probably the best thing you can wear when it is unbearably hot outside. In fact, they’re there, but you literally feel like you’re naked. Which, in said circumstances is actually a pretty pleasant sensation. If you feel like they are a bit too revealing for the occasion you’re going to, you can always throw on a light cover-up and take it off when it’s no longer necessary. The really go well with both skirts, shorts and even when t’s colder with jeans and an oversized sweater. I love how they add a touch of effortlessness and nonchalance to every look.

3. Wrap dress

Why wrap dress? Isn’t it just a dress? This style of dress is superior to others because of how comfortable it is. It leaves a lot of room for movement, doesn’t stick to your body, usually has decent length and again elongates your silhouette and creates the illusion of an hourglass figure. You can dress it up in a casual as well as formal way, depending on the accessories. It works well with both sandals, heels and sneakers. Also the  V-neck is preferable when you don’t want to break a sweat. Some of these dresses are technically not wrap dresses, but they do the job in resembling those.

4. Skort

This name makes me laugh. But the garment is really a useful one. They are shorts that look like a skirt. I’m obsessed with these lately, since they are a compromise between  comfortable short shorts and elegant skirts. Most of the time, no one will recognize that they aren’t just a miniskirt and you’ll be able to do whatever you wish without worrying about accidentally showing too much. I recently bought a black, silky skort and when paired with a camisole or tight bodysuit it looks like I’m all dressed up, when in reality I feel as comfy as ever. Once again, some of the pieces below are just shorts, but  their purpose is exactly the same as skorts’.

5. Mules

And lastly, you’ll need shoes. Mules are your summer staple. So many women complain that they have no comfortable shoes, that can be worn with  jeans as well as a dress. These are the solution. I picked the ones on not to high, stable heel. They’re essentially the more classy slippers. I was surprised to see how good they did on my bike rides and long walks around the town. I particularly love mules in colors that match one’s skin tone, because then they blend with the limbs and you get a mile-long legs look. This doesn’t mean only shoes in nudes, but also golds, silvers and also the transparent ones.

MET Gala 2018: Best Looks

Hi there!

MET Gala 2018 has officially arrived and as usual it’s time to free our inner fashion critiques and judge the red carpet looks. This year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. It is said to be one of the most controversial topics that was ever proposed by The Costume Institute.

A quick disclaimer: annual MET Ball is a fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It goes together with the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that display, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year, celebrities are chosen to serve as the event’s honorary chairs.

This year’s gala, which marked the event’s 70th anniversary, was co-chaired by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace. As far as the exhibition goes it will feature 40 Vatican vestments and accessories spanning 15 papacies and some of the pieces have never left the Vatican’s possession before. Items such as Pope Benedict XV’s white silk cape embroidered with gold thread and the pointed bishop’s hat of Pope Leo XIII, will go on display alongside pieces by Coco Chanel, who was educated by nuns, John Galliano, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Donatella Versace, who is a sponsor of the exhibition. What is raising many brows is weather this kind of exhibition should consist of not only clothes, but also sacred artefacts.

The problem I have with this event in general is that for the most part, celebrities do not care about the theme. Why does it bother me? Being dressed according to the topic is a sign of  honoring the exhibition and showing respect to the people that worked hard on it. Every single year no matter what the main theme is there are always stars that go for simple, plain, boring tight dresses in black, white or gold. I feel like they’d rather just look good in their safe choices, showcase their hourglass figure instead of at least trying to be brave. MET Gala is the place to go for all(not nothing), to experiment, to wow everybody. The sky is the limit. It should be the ball that gives us all the best haute couture creations from world’s best designers.

Another thing is – the guests are quite often just not that into fashion world. Maybe that’s why they don’t know how to show these extravagant themes in a more to-wear way. It does require a lot of knowledge and imagination and these celebrities might not have these skills. They have their stylists but usually the approach is: better be pretty than odd. I’m obviously not surprised that Anna Wintour invites popular names to her ball, however maybe there should be more guests that are truly passionate about mode and can bring something more to the red carpet.

Religion is certainly not an easy theme, but it also offers a lot of mesmerizing inspiration. It is also very broad and can be approached from many different sides. I personally think that this year’s gala is not the worst one, many stars at least tried to show something relevant – usually crowns or gilded, embroidered pieces. But that’s better than nothing.

Here are some of my favourite looks from MET Gala 2018*:

Let me know in the comments which outfits do you like the most.

Enjoy!

Martyna

Long black lace dress in Łazienki Palace Gardens

Welcome back to MyVanityFlare!

Today, what I have for you is photo shoot from one of the most(in my opinion) mesmerizing places in Warsaw – Łazienki Palace Gardens. They’re famous for palatial peacocks that walk around there freely and live concerts that you can enjoy near the Frederick Chopin’s monument. I also love their architecture, white facades, symmetry and sense of nostalgia I always feel there.

I really wanted to show you this long lace dress and there are many reasons for that: from the fact that I’m simply obsessed with it ever since I bought it, to the fact that it goes in theme with one of the biggest trend’s for upcoming season – sheerness that I wrote an article about here. It’s completely transparent, so I decided to put  this little black garment underneath and tie a belt around my waist.

What really inspired me was Dolce&Gabbana and their regal, baroque-like looks. I’ve decided on wearing gold statement jewelry from Lilou, that resembles oriental patterns that I had a chance to marvel at last summer when I was in Venice, on the  building of the Doge’s Palace.  By the way, did you know that Louis Vuitton’s famous monogram was  designed by Georges Vuitton who got influenced by this royal residence? As far as the shoes go, I think that this model is the ultimate must-have in every woman’s closet. Why? It’s very elegant, it elongates the legs, looks like heels, can be worn with both skirts and jeans but is so comfortable you’ll want to sleep in it, I promise. Tiny coffer bag with gold chain and padlock, complements the stylization perfectly. The final touch is bold lip, which I obtained by using KatVonD’s Lolita liquid lipstick. The only thing missing is bejeweled crown – then I could go and reign the World.

OK, let’s be real – even without it I’m still going to rule the World.

I know that this outfit may seem like something completely not wearable, too theatrical, too romantic, however if you don’t want to look as dramatic, you can switch the pumps for your favorite sneakers, skip the large accessories and tone the makeup down  a bit. Long sheer dresses are really in right now and there are multiple ways to wear them in a casual way. What I like to do, is pair them with t-shirt and skinny jeans, or a simple skirt. Another solution can be putting some garment on top of it – think oversized sweaters and baggy jumpers.

I hope that you’ll enjoy this photo shoot, both the fashion side and the scenery.

All the love,

Martyna

Burgundy Leopard Fur in Zachęta

Hi!

I’ve been feeling down recently. Why? Because winter is so stubborn this year in Poland and doesn’t want to go away, even though it’s almost Easter time. All my friends know that I am the biggest hater of cold weather and simply can’t stand it.  It’s like winter sucks out all the will to live and enjoy the world, from me. Still… I don’t give up on myself completely and with a great supply of vanilla candles, tea with cinnamon and fluffy socks I somehow manage to get through cold months.

As far as fashion goes, I find winter to be much more difficult to manage than the rest of the year. I have only a few sets of clothes that I’m not freezing in, so it gets boring after a while. This time however, I was in need of a new coat and decided I want something extraordinary, something to make me be less pessimistic and something to make me feel like an Ice Queen. I was thinking of big, elegant fur (took inspiration from Cruella de Vil). I was looking for it for months, but nothing suited my high (as always) expectations.

And then, one day I went into this huge department store and saw the coat of my dreams hanging calms on the rack – burgundy with black leopard print, made of fake fur, so soft and warm. It was perfect… almost – the price was not perfect. So I left the shop without even trying it on, after showing this beauty to my mother and telling her that at least it’s not like I want something non-existent.

Week passes by and I get a phone call from my mom. In Trussardi’s store there is a huge sale and my glorious jacket costs less than half the original price. Still a splurge, but maybe the worth it one. So I visit this boutique, put it on. .. and fall in love even deeper. It’s such a luxury to be able to wear it, to have it touch my skin, to let my hair rest on it. I am so amazed, looking at myself in the mirror and cherishing the moment. Because Christmas was right around the corner we’ve decide that it will be my present. I wasn’t doubting my love for it, however the price tag was still quite overwhelming.

Month goes by and I unpack this big, gold box and put my newest closet addition on… and I don’t take it off ever since.

I wanted to show it to You so badly, however the weather was  awful, so we’ve decided to go to one of my favorite galleries in Warsaw – Zachęta, and shoot there, surrounded by modern art, marble and mirrors.

I hope that you’ll enjoy these pictures and will share your opinions in the comments.

Thanks,

Martyna

Top 3 fashion rules to live by

Hi there!

After publishing my first few articles like this one about Rei Kawakubo or this one about sheerness, I’ve noticed many people saying that they like how these garments, designs look but they can’t even imagine wearing them. Why? Everybody has their own reasons, however what I often hear is: I’m too old, too fat, insecure, it won’t suit me, It’s inappropriate. And I started to think and ask myself who set these rules and why so many of us feel the need to follow them.

To me it’s really sad and seems very restrictive. I remember that ever since I was a little girl I loved experimenting with my looks, trying on sequined dresses, high heels, feathery scarfs in thrift stores ( if you don’t visit them often check this out) or stealing long gowns, huge pearl rings, colorful berets from my grandma’s closet. And here’s a thing – I obviously didn’t care what anyone around me was thinking. I was enjoying it and feeling empowered, beautiful and confident. Didn’t you also act like that in your childhood?

So, what has changed? Why do we feel like we’re constantly judged and valued based on our appearance? Why would we rather stay safe in our basic T-shirt and jeans instead of at least trying on this red skirt that screams our name from the shop window?

And I know that for some people wearing plain, classic garments is simply convenient and not something to care about. But after seeing how big of a battle it is for my family members or friends to give themselves permission to go to the changing room in the store and put on something that they love, but feel like it’s not right for their age, body type, position … and so on, I am reassured that this post is much-needed.

Okay, but why did I write about rules if I don’t support setting fashion rules? That’s because my rules are different. They don’t restrict, don’t put anyone in certain boxes. They’re actually really freeing.

So here are my top 3 fashion rules. Enjoy!

  1. Don’t assume that you will look bad in something before you try it on.                           I hear my mom say it all the time: But I know I’ll look ridiculous! First of all – how do you know if you’ve never worn it before? And second of all if so, then what? What is so awful about looking funny? It’s just clothes… and usually you’re the only one seeing yourself like that. In most cases you’ve simply made up this idea in your mind that this particular item isn’t suitable for you for some reason and it’s reserved for this special group of perfect, tall, elegant models, so you are not allowed to wear it. Well, that’s not true. You’ll never know how to dress well if you’ll keep banning certain types of clothes or colors. And you’ll never be happy, always feeling worse because you are not worth having interesting, beautiful garments. I always try on things that catch my eye and quite often I end up laughing at my look… and moving on.
  2. Trust your inner gut.                                                                                                                    Usually when I go shopping I am not alone and when trying something on I ask for opinions. But… I don’t let this opinion determine my final decision. And this applies not only to other people’s advice, but also everything I hear and read in the magazines, internet or social media. Maybe Anna Wintour truly believes that wearing all black is horrendous. Fine. I don’t have to agree. So I don’t. If we were to take every piece of information that we encounter daily and take it to our hearts, there would be nothing left for us to wear. I obviously appreciate other’s advice and   always consider their points. Sometimes this person is less biased, not as excited and can look at piece we want to buy from a different, more sensible perspective. However, in the end you’ll be the one (in most cases) to pay for it and you’ll be the one to wear it. So, trust yourself, think about how this garment makes you feel and if your inner gut tells you that it would be the perfect purchase, then go for it.
  3. Be creative and have fun.                                                                                                                  I’m going to repeat it again – clothes are just clothes, no more, no less. Don’t over think your outfits, don’t attach any special value to them. You don’t have to keep concentrating on how you’ll be perceived by others and constantly try to please them. Look at fashion as a tool to express yourself, show your true personality. And I won’t believe that your personality enjoys being trapped in boring, sad clothes that you wear because somebody told you it’s proper or safe. So, let your creativity flow and your awesomeness show. Look for inspiration around you, on streets, in magazines, on the runway, in movies or books and try to incorporate new ideas into your wardrobe. An example? Lately I’ve stumbled upon one of my old favorite music video by The Pussycat Dolls – Wait a minute, where they’re wearing black trench coats, big sunglasses and act like they’re secret agents. I took my black classic trench coat, tied it on my waist to make it look like a dress, added long heeled boots and let my hair loose. I felt incredible and  had so much fun. I could tell that my walk was faster and more confident. I was extremely empowered. It’s not surprising, since it has been scientifically proven that changing your style can improve your mood and be really stimulating. Also, know that in order to keep your looks interesting you don’t have to go on a shopping spree. You can work with pieces you already have in your closet. How? Think accessories-belts, shoes and jewelry. I can guarantee you that there’s at least 10 different ways to wear every single piece of clothing you own. And as far as fun goes, it is always possible to find happiness in fashion. Even if you have to follow special dress code. The truth is that it’s enforced on you in order to manifest some kind of idea, like respecting the customers. And it is sometimes advised to fulfill this idea by wearing white shirt and black skirt, but when you think about it, obviously putting on burgundy suit also is elegant and doesn’t offend anyone. So this outside the box and don’t restrict yourself.

I hope that you enjoyed this article and that it inspired you to be brave and stop limiting your fashion choices. I would love to hear your opinions and experiences, so please share them in the comments.
