Get inspired: Checks/Plaid

Welcome back!

Summer is here and we’re enjoying it. We’re living in light, flowy dresses, shorts, weightless jumpsuits and silky camisoles. At least I do (if you want to know what are my 5 summer essentials, you can see it here). I know that nobody wants to be reminded that holidays won’t last forever. But really, they won’t.

To make this statement seem a bit more optimistic, I can reassure you that upcoming autumn can also be very exciting and pleasurable. I cherish the beginning of new semester, new challenges, new friends, starting from point zero. It’s also time when the most important – September issue of magazines comes out, which is always awaited by many. I have to say tough, I hate fall’s weather. Rain, mud, darkness make me feel tired, sleepy and overall exhausted.

I’ll try to get some positivity into you, by showing one of the Autumn 2018 biggest trends, which is plaid. I can’t say that it is revolutionary to put on a tartan trench coat during fall, but right now this pattern got a bit of a make-over and became much more modern, fun and functional.

Plaid was present in clothing for decades. Red checked trousers were a staple in punk’s closet, Kurt Cobain wouldn’t be himself without his flannel shirt, grunge or preppy style probably wouldn’t exist at all. It just goes to show how versatile this pattern is, how it can be worn in countless ways.

There are also many different types of plaid: from classy houndstooth, summery gingham to contemporary window pane check. If you’re interested in how all those variations look, there will be a chart with all of them as the very last photo in this post.

Since the weather is still really hot, it’s worth pointing out that checks can be a great pattern to choose even now. If you enjoy retro vibes, two-pieces in white and pink/yellow  might be perfect, fun pick. Also going for most basic tank top with tartan skirt or shorts will be a foolproof way to achieve effortless but certainly not boring look.

Checks are going to be this fall/winter seasons must-haves. This pattern could be observed on almost all major catwalks during fashion week. Every designer approached it from a different perspective, usually from the unusual one. Erdem went for a dark, mysterious, slightly dramatic aesthetic, matching heavy double-buttoned jackets with long skirts and sheer hosiery. Versace’s collection was straight up from Clueless’ wardrobe. Purple and yellow, belt bags and mixing different checks is really 90s-approved. Saint Laurent proved that glen check can be a part of sexy night-out stylization. Michel Kors showed us a grunge option, Fendi had some head-to-toe plaid outfits, while Emporio Armani created chic, modern, polished pieces.

So, to sum it up: plaid in every shape or form is in this upcoming season. You can experiment with it, mix with other patterns, layer, pick bold colors. If you’ll get rid of the idea that tartan is a boring, old-fashioned fabric, than you might find a new favourite fall/winter fashion staple.

Here’s a gallery with the best looks from runways and street that include checked clothing.

Enjoy!

Summer outfit ideas: Black Romper/Jumpsuit

It’s been a long time since I last wrote for you.

OK, it’s been two weeks. Well…

It turned out that I’m much more busy and tired during holidays, than I was while going to school. Finding time for work, studying for exams, writing and maintaining what so called social life is extremely tough and leaves me with 5 hours of sleep at most. I know that that’s what I need to do in order to achieve what I truly want in life (so it’s almost like I want to wake up at 5:30… maybe I should even enjoy it?). I want to be able to post articles here as frequently as possible, so no matter how many other things are going on in my days, there’s no way I’m not going to make it work. Especially since MyVanityFlare is what gives me so much inspiration and power. I think that it comes from the knowledge that maybe what I write is valuable to you.

As for today’s post – it is a photoshoot that was taken on a very busy Sunday and was almost cancelled due to thunder, which thankfully stopped half an hour earlier. Three hours of walking around Warsaw, watching Vistula and searching for the perfect scenery have resulted in many photos, that I’ll be uploading here and on @myvanityflare Instagram in the upcoming days.

The outfits that I’ll be presenting, so this one too, all are heat-friendly and for the most part they are a visualization of one of my previous posts on this season’s essentials. They also feature one of 2018 summer’s trends – wearing sneakers with everything. To me this concept is not something new, not because I’m an avid fan of these shoes, but simply because my lifestyle requires so much walking, running and just in general being constantly in a rush, that usually heels can’t be my choice ( they still are my choice way too often…but who doesn’t love the confidence boost that they give?).

This stylization is one of my personal summer staples. I literally wear it all the time. Even now, when it’s rather cold in Warsaw I still put on this romper, but with sheer black tights and a striped Balmain-like jacket. It’s actually supposed to be a “night-out” piece,  but I do not care about what is written on the label. You also shouldn’t. It is wrapped around waist, which is always great for elongating the silhouette. It has lower back and it kind of became a little black dress for me.

Another garment that I want to talk a bit more about is the bag. I was looking for the perfect shopper, that would be able to fit my whole life inside. Doesn’t sound that hard, does it? The thing is, I didn’t want it to be made of genuine leather. That is for the ethical reasons. I’m trying to support as little cruelty to animals as possible in every aspect of my existence. I knew that my accessories don’t have to be leather in order to be high-quality and extraordinary. After more than a year of searching, I finally bought my dream bag. It’s classy and elegant, but certainly not basic. i love it’s „snake” material, gold details, lack of big brand logo and practicality. It was also much more affordable than similar, leather models.

These shots were taken in two locations, but one is literally on the opposite side of the street to the other. Leaves are what covers the BUW-Library of Warsaw University facade and the copper-turquoise wall was a surprising discovery that we were more than excited to stumble upon.

I hope that you’ll enjoy this gallery and that it will give you some real-life examples of how to style The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer.

Enjoy!

All of the pride-celebrating clothes you can get right now

Hello!

As promised in my last post about summer fashion essentials, I summoned all of my resources and  I am already back with another article.

Every year, June is the official Pride Month. Why ? Because it is when the Stonewall Riots took place, way back in 1969. The riots were prompted by a raid that took place during the early morning, at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. The LGBT community held a series of spontaneous, often violent demonstrations to protest against it and calling for the establishment of places that gays and lesbians could go and be open about their sexual orientation without fears of being arrested. Over the years since the event, many activist groups and LGBT rights organisations have been formed around the world. The movement  celebrates sexual diversity, is a way of protesting against discrimination and violence for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people . It promotes their dignity, equal rights, self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s awareness of the issues they face.

Here, on MyVanityFlare I want to show you how fashion can change one’s life, how big of an impact it can have. You might think that it is too provoking, too attention-grabbing to wear clothes that are a demonstration of one’s beliefs about sexuality. I understand this point of view. On the other side I can’t find a legitimate reason why seeing somebody in a colorful T-shirt would bother anyone so much. It’s not surprising that after years of living in shame, guilt or social isolation a person wants to just be free and openly show how she/he feels. Especially today, in the era of omnipresent exhibitionism, social media and reality shows we have this urge to share everything with the whole world.

If wearing a pride flag pattern on your hat is going to make you feel proud and confident, then that’s the magic of fashion I truly admire. I know that for some people it is really difficult to find the courage to do such a thing and so, if they finally decide to do it, it is such a freeing and memorable moment for them. I am an avid supporter of that.

Why do worldwide famous, sometimes even high-fashion designers want and do celebrate the Pride? Why do they create special garments with LGBT symbols on them? Some of the possible reasons are:

  1. It sells

Yes, I know that this statements seems harsh and totally not noble in any way, but it’s true. Over the years, more and more people admitted to being a part or a supporter of the LGBT community. It resulted in overall increase in public’s interest in this topic and also culture’s involvement. The machine has been set off and we got numerous big outings from famous figures, social campaigns, books and so much more. It couldn’t have been escaped that Pride Month will become a tool to make money, and so it did.

2. It is in fashion

Of course, just the sheer fact that Pride can give a luxury brand profit,  won’t make it worth investing in. When we talk about high-fashion, we need to remember the importance of the image that is carefully planned and presented to the client and the prestige that usually took years to be achieved. Quite recently, LGBT community started to expand and as a result stopped being associated with tackiness and bizarreness. It has come to people’s minds that its supporters have no identical look, they come from different backgrounds, they have different stories and that very often when seen on the street they don’t seem to be different that those around. Because why would they? That’s why even expensive, elegant brands aren’t afraid anymore to create collections that are connected to Pride. It is no longer something to hide, be ashamed of, rather the opposite, something upstanding, that suggests open-mindedness and consciousness.

3. It is relatable

Sometimes a designer may just feel connected to this community, probably be a part of it. Then making a decision to help it, might seem almost like a necessity, a matter of honor. Fashion world is usually equated with homosexuality, most famous designers are speculated to be gay, however it’s not that common for them to be very open about their sexuality or make any statements. Another think that can happen is that a brand will invite someone who does identify with LGBT community to collaborate and create a seasonal collection. This is a manifestation of support, but doesn’t make the creator himself attached to Pride directly.

To celebrate Pride Month 2018, there has been a lot of special products released to the market. I think that the reasons behind this are not as important as the believes they verbalize.

The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer

Welcome back to MyVanityFlare!

It feels so good to write for you again. I’m so sorry for not publishing anything lately, but my life got busy with school year ending and I had to devote my time and energy to studying. Thankfully I can say that it was worth it and I’m content with the grades I achieved. Now that I’m done with that, one of my goals for holidays is to focus on growing this blog and creating amazing articles for you.

First one : The only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer.

The idea for this post came to me when I was away from home for a few weeks with just one small suitcase and so, only a few options as far as outfits go. It surprised me that I always had something to wear and was never unsatisfied with the way I look or feel. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? I know that for many people the concept of not having tons of garments to choose from seems more like a nightmare, but on the other hand they are usually the ones to cry and panic every morning because from millions of dresses they own not even one is suitable to be worn on this day. I also used to be like this, but lately I’ve learned to buy less, but make better choices.

PS: If you’d like an article on that please let me know in the comments.

Coming back to  summer clothing. Here’s what I think is important to consider when choosing an outfit during this season:

  • The weather

In Poland, where I currently live, it is around 30ºC. That’s a really high temperature that significantly limits the outfit choices I have. I refuse to be melting in the sun in the name of fashion (OK, I would do anything in the name of fashion, but I try to stay sane for the most part). It can be tempting to just go out in the bikini but society taught us that there are more classy things to do. So, all of the options I’ll present are really light, usually flow and they let your skin breathe.

  •   Your activity

I try to truly use the opportunities that summer brings, to their fullest, which means that I do much more outdoor activities than normally. Whenever I can, I use public bikes instead of busses or underground as my commute. I also try to always have a small towel with me and if it is possible sit in the park or in the beach and do my usual work. It can be tricky to be comfortable and not have a wardrobe malfunction in skimpy short shorts or in a tight mini skirt. I don’t think that clothes should cause you to change your daily plans or limit them, so in the gallery I created you’ll find pieces that are very universal and practical.

  •  The elegance

When we think about typical clothes to wear in the heat it’s often things like crop tops, dresses with cut-outs, ”booty shorts”, pineapple-printed shirts, baseball caps, flip flops and other beach/hippie-inspired garments. And don’t get me wrong, I love some of these too, but the problem is that I am aware that they don’t make me look particularly sophisticated. It’s not that I always need to or want to be perceived this way, but quite frequently I do. Living in the city, going to restaurants, museums, running errands, meeting people, I like to be rather elegant. Obviously I won’t go for stiff shirts, suits or long dresses. There are great options that say class and still are appropriate for when it’s hot.

  • * Trends

I wasn’t sure if I should include this point in here, because I am a strong believer that trends aren’t eternal and usually are just a tool to make us spend more money on the things we do not need. But there’s one thing that is certainly true: what is on top is what is on store shelves. Even when you don’t intend to, you probably subconsciously buy clothes that were created in accordance to what was presented on the runways and predicted to be profitable. Sometimes it’s even harder to find something simple and basic, instead of a garment all covered in sequins, because they are said to be trendy now. Don’t worry though, if I don’t enjoy what is popular I don’t promote it, I promise.

It is crucial in my opinion to find the balance between looking good and feeling good and I hope that what I’m going to show you will be helpful in achieving that. I can guarantee you that if you’ll take at least some of my advice you will be able to open your closet in the morning and without a single doubt pick your clothes  for the beautiful summer day ahead of you.

So, here are the only 5 pieces of clothing you’ll need this summer:

  1. Romper/ Jumpsuit

These are seriously life-changing. They come in so many different styles, materials and colors. I love the ones that look like dresses, because they are very often not tight, they fit really well and are perfect for when you want to be a bit more active. I recommend sleeveless ones and since I am a petite girl and always try to make my legs look longer,   jumpsuits with underlined waist are my go-to.

2.  Camisole top

They are probably the best thing you can wear when it is unbearably hot outside. In fact, they’re there, but you literally feel like you’re naked. Which, in said circumstances is actually a pretty pleasant sensation. If you feel like they are a bit too revealing for the occasion you’re going to, you can always throw on a light cover-up and take it off when it’s no longer necessary. The really go well with both skirts, shorts and even when t’s colder with jeans and an oversized sweater. I love how they add a touch of effortlessness and nonchalance to every look.

3. Wrap dress

Why wrap dress? Isn’t it just a dress? This style of dress is superior to others because of how comfortable it is. It leaves a lot of room for movement, doesn’t stick to your body, usually has decent length and again elongates your silhouette and creates the illusion of an hourglass figure. You can dress it up in a casual as well as formal way, depending on the accessories. It works well with both sandals, heels and sneakers. Also the  V-neck is preferable when you don’t want to break a sweat. Some of these dresses are technically not wrap dresses, but they do the job in resembling those.

4. Skort

This name makes me laugh. But the garment is really a useful one. They are shorts that look like a skirt. I’m obsessed with these lately, since they are a compromise between  comfortable short shorts and elegant skirts. Most of the time, no one will recognize that they aren’t just a miniskirt and you’ll be able to do whatever you wish without worrying about accidentally showing too much. I recently bought a black, silky skort and when paired with a camisole or tight bodysuit it looks like I’m all dressed up, when in reality I feel as comfy as ever. Once again, some of the pieces below are just shorts, but  their purpose is exactly the same as skorts’.

5. Mules

And lastly, you’ll need shoes. Mules are your summer staple. So many women complain that they have no comfortable shoes, that can be worn with  jeans as well as a dress. These are the solution. I picked the ones on not to high, stable heel. They’re essentially the more classy slippers. I was surprised to see how good they did on my bike rides and long walks around the town. I particularly love mules in colors that match one’s skin tone, because then they blend with the limbs and you get a mile-long legs look. This doesn’t mean only shoes in nudes, but also golds, silvers and also the transparent ones.
